In Marrakech, rooftops are not just there to cover houses: they are a way of life in their own right. Between the call of the muezzin, the golden light of sunset and the scent of fresh mint, the rooftops of the red city offer a unique spectacle, suspended between tradition and modernity.

1. Why rooftops are a must in Marrakech
The medina is a living labyrinth, vibrant and often noisy. By going up a little, you discover another side of Marrakech: calmer, more contemplative. From the terraces you can see the minarets, the palm trees, and sometimes the snow-capped peaks of the Atlas. Time seems to stand still, drink in hand, facing the glowing horizon.
Rooftops are also places to socialise. You meet travellers from all over the world, locals unwinding after work and photographers chasing the perfect light, over a fresh lemon juice or a mint tea.
2. The best rooftops in Marrakech, our selection
Café des Épices (Rahba Kedima square). Simple, accessible and always lively. Ideal for a light lunch or a tea while watching the bustle of the spice square, with an open view over the rooftops of the medina. Relaxed atmosphere. It is the first address we recommend to first-time visitors.
Le Nomad (derb Aarjan). One of the most photographed views in Marrakech. Modern cuisine revisiting Moroccan classics, attentive service, elegant setting. Ideal for lunch or late afternoon before sunset. Booking recommended in high season.
El Fenn (derb Moullay Abdullah ben Hezzian). For a chic, arty experience: rooftop pool, refined cocktails, carefully designed interiors. The favourite of travellers who like understated luxury. Higher prices, but an experience to match.
Kabana (derb el Ferrane). Trendy atmosphere, fusion cuisine, DJ sets in the evening. Ideal for evenings, less so for quiet contemplation. Exceptional panoramic view over the medina.
Terrasse des Épices (souk Cherifia). An institution: a large shaded terrace, a 360° view over the souks, generous Moroccan cuisine. Very busy, but still a pleasant experience. Perfect for lunch with family or friends.
3. The best time to enjoy the rooftops
Golden hour, between 5 and 7 pm depending on the season, is without doubt the best time. The low light turns the ochre walls to gold, the minarets stand out against a fiery sky, and the city shifts from the bustle of the day to the softness of the evening.
Our tip: arrive 30 minutes before sunset to get a good spot. Morning is also a lovely option, especially in summer: the terraces are cool, almost empty, and the light on the medina rooftops has something magical about it.
4. Our terrace at Riad Palau, the private rooftop

The Riad Palau terrace, reserved for our guests.
At Riad Palau, our terrace is a place to relax reserved exclusively for our guests. No crowds, no loud music: just birdsong, the morning breeze and the charm of the ochre walls catching the light.
You can enjoy your Moroccan breakfast facing the rooftops of Sidi Ben Slimane, read in the shade of a parasol in the early afternoon, or simply unwind after a day in the souks. It is our little secret spot, far from the tourist bustle.

Frequently asked questions about Marrakech rooftops
Do rooftops serve alcohol?
Most rooftops in the medina serve only non-alcoholic drinks (juices, teas, soft drinks). A few more upmarket places such as El Fenn offer cocktails. Check directly before you go.
Do you need to book?
In high season (March to May, September to November), yes, especially for places like Le Nomad or El Fenn. Outside busy periods you can usually turn up without a booking.
Are they open all year round?
Yes, but opening hours vary with the seasons. In summer most open earlier in the morning and close during the hottest hours of the afternoon.
In short
Whether you love spectacular sunsets, mint tea or panoramic views over the minarets, rooftops are an essential part of the Marrakech experience. Each address has its own character: it is up to you to find the one that suits your mood.
