Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou and Taourirt: Day Trip from Marrakech

If there is one thing that leaves no one indifferent on a trip to Morocco, it is its spellbinding architecture. From the hidden dars in the Atlas Mountains to the peaceful riads of Marrakech and the mystical ksour of the desert, every corner of the country tells a unique story. For full immersion in this extraordinary heritage, three sites are unmissable from Marrakech: Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou and Taourirt.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • Telouet: the Glaoui kasbah at 1,800 m altitude, via the Tizi n'Tichka pass.
  • Ait Ben Haddou: an earthen ksar listed by UNESCO since 1987, the setting of many films.
  • Taourirt: the kasbah of Ouarzazate, still partly inhabited.
  • Format: one day (leave at 7 am, back around 8 pm) or two days with a night on the way.
  • Organisation: private car with a French-speaking driver, arranged by the riad.

1. Telouet and the Glaoui kasbah

Picture yourself perched at 1,800 metres in the Atlas Mountains, facing an earthen kasbah that looks like an abandoned palace. This is Telouet, one of Morocco's best-kept secrets and yet one of its most astonishing.

The Telouet kasbah was the main residence of Thami El Glaoui, the powerful pasha of Marrakech who ruled the whole region in the first half of the 20th century. At its peak it was one of the most luxurious palaces in Morocco: reception rooms decorated with zellige, carved cedar ceilings, finely chiselled stucco mashrabiya. Since the site was abandoned in 1956, nature has gradually reclaimed the unrestored parts, creating a striking contrast between past splendour and romantic ruins.

The road there, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), is a spectacle in itself: lunar landscapes, Berber villages clinging to cliffs, flocks of sheep on the slopes. Every bend holds a surprise.

  • Altitude: 1,800 m
  • Visit time: at least 1h30
  • Local guide: about 50 MAD, at the entrance

Our tip: take a local guide at the entrance to access the interior rooms and understand the history of the Glaoui.

2. Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar

An hour's drive from Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou is probably Morocco's most famous architectural site after the Marrakech medina. This earthen ksar (fortified village), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, looks as if it has stepped out of the Thousand and One Nights.

Hollywood has noticed: Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Babel… The list of productions filmed here is impressive. Its watchtowers, labyrinthine alleys and stacked houses form a natural set of rare visual power.

Cross the wadi on foot (or by the footbridge) to enter the ksar. Climb to the communal granary at the top for a sweeping view over the valley and the first dunes on the horizon. The late-afternoon light is particularly magical: the ochre earth walls literally glow.

  • From Telouet: 1 hour's drive
  • Visit time: 2 hours

Our tip: arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm to avoid the tour bus groups. The shops at the entrance are unavoidable, so bargain with a smile.

3. Taourirt, the kasbah of Ouarzazate

30 minutes from Ait Ben Haddou lies Ouarzazate, nicknamed the "gateway to the desert". In the heart of the town, the Taourirt kasbah is another architectural gem, also linked to the Glaoui family.

Less crowded than Ait Ben Haddou, Taourirt offers a more authentic experience. Part of the kasbah is still inhabited by Moroccan families: you will see children playing in the courtyards, women hanging washing on the terraces and craftsmen working in ground-floor workshops. This is living architecture, not a frozen museum.

UNESCO funded the restoration of several reception rooms that give a glimpse of the original splendour: painted ceilings, zellige floors, stucco arches. The guided tour, included in the ticket, is particularly informative.

  • From Ait Ben Haddou: 30 min
  • Guided tour: included in the ticket

Our tip: combine it with a visit to the Ouarzazate film studios (Atlas Corporation Studios), 5 minutes away by car.

4. How to organise this trip from Marrakech

These three sites naturally combine into a circuit:

  • In one day (leaving at 7 am): Telouet, Ait Ben Haddou, Taourirt, back in Marrakech around 8 pm. A brisk pace but doable.
  • In two days: a night in Ouarzazate or in a guesthouse near Ait Ben Haddou, to enjoy the morning and evening light on the kasbahs.

At Riad Palau, we organise this circuit by private car with a French-speaking driver: private transfer, local guide, personalised itinerary. Prices vary with the number of people and the length of the trip.

A full day (leave at 7 am, back around 8 pm) or two days for a more relaxed pace.
